The community of Gunjur is treating with cautious optimism news that the occupants of the boat that left it’s shores over two months ago were in detention in Mauritania. Audio recordings, purportedly of some of the over 100 migrants that reportedly left Gunjur in October, have been circulating in the coastal community recently.
The occupants of the vessel were reportedly held at Daru Naim detention center in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott. In the audio, people could be heard complaining about the deplorable condition of detention. “We cannot confirm whether the audios are those of the people that boarded the boat that left Gunjur,”activist Ahmed Manjang told this reporter on Sunday.
He explained that efforts were underway in identifying the recordings.
Meanwhile, the immigration department’s spokesperson Supt. Mamanding Dibba referred this reporter to the immigration headquarters when contacted on the issue.
The coastal town of Gunjur was in October 2021 flung into state of deep uncertainty and anxiety as the whereabouts of thirty-five (35) of the community’s young men could not be ascertained after setting on a sea journey to Europe.
