Eye Africa dismisses EU report as baseless

The proprietor of Eye Africa TV has dismissed as baseless EU’s report of disproportionate reportage of the December poll by the private media. Lamin Kanteh added that its understandable GRTS was credited for a fair reportage of the general election because D35m had been injected into it for exactly that purpose.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Progress, Kanteh said inadequacy of resources were some of the factors that affected the election coverage of some private media. “We have seen D35M that GRTS was subvented to do what the public expected them to do,” Kanteh explained as he responded to a damning EU Election Observer Mission findings on media reportage of the presidential election.

According to him, the private media has done a great job in view of the resources at their disposal. “It’s only the UDP and NPP that advertised with us during the election. We had limited resources,” he posited. The Eye Africa CEO dismissed as baseless EU’s report of bias on the part of private media in its election coverage.
“We have done our best. The report is baseless. I think what EU should do is think about the private media in their budget,” he stated. “EU knows this because that’s what many countries do.” He pointed out that it was a struggle for some of the private media houses to financially sustain their election coverage.
