Several people reportedly killed, missing in MFDC- ECOMIG clash in Gambian territory

Several people were reportedly killed in the Monday gun battle between the Senegalese contingent of the Ecowas Military Intervention in the Gambia (Ecomig) and separatists in the southern Senegalese region of Casamance. Ecomig confirmed the death of one of its troops in the exchange. It also said one separatist fighter was also killed in the confrontation.

But details have been emerging about a much higher death toll, albeit in trickles, as according to latest reports several have died in the fighting and nine Senegalese soldiers are said to be missing.

There are reports tha a search has been launched for a Gambian secret agent who was suspected to have gone missing in the clash. CID Abdoulie Jammeh posted at Kanilai has reportedly gone missing on Monday during the clash.

A family member alleged in a Fatu Network interview that Abdou was trying to respond to a distress call from a villager in Kapa about the shooting and got arrested by the Senegalese forces. Villagers around the Gambia-Casamance border have spoken of intense gunfire in the area on Monday.
